William McCarthy received his Master of Arts in Counseling and Theological Studies from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and is Licensed as a clinical mental health counselor in North Carolina. Special interests include working with youth ages 5 and up, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, parent/child emotional intimacy, blended family coordination on parenting, sex education, and grief and loss issues.
For income during educational years William worked in landscaping and construction gaining experience and respect for the skill and toil of manual labor. Having grown up with naturalist values and outdoor recreational sports William is highly skilled in orienteering, backpacking, wildlife identification, wildfowl hunting, Labrador training, and fresh/salt water fly-fishing. These skills were coalesced with his theological and psychological/counseling training when he served for two years in Colorado and Wyoming as a mountaineering guide with Young Life Wilderness Ranch, an outdoor recreation ministry to teenagers in high school.
During his graduate education he interned with Moses Cone Behavioral Health participating in outpatient group and art therapy as well as child/adolescent inpatient group therapy and family assessment. Interning with Crossroads Psychiatric Group yielded further experience with participation in individual psychotherapy and couples therapy. Moreover, this led to William’s invitation to be a part of the group. Simultaneous with building his practice and clientele he worked with the Moses Cone Behavioral Health Assessment Crises Team (ACT) engaging in psychological assessment of emergency room and/or hospital patients experiencing psychological, emotional, or substance abuse crises.
After seven years at Crossroads Psychiatric Group, William began his own private counseling practice, 180º Counseling Services. He is approaching 2 decades of practice. William is passionate about authenticity, integrity, and sensitivity in private and professional relationships. His youthful and playful personality is well suited for working with children, adolescents, and yes adults too. William and his wife, also a counseling graduate of Gordon- Conwell Theological Seminary are parents of young adult boy/girl twins.
